The Federal Association of Teachers of Dancing [Aust.] Ltd is Australia’s oldest Society of Teachers of Dancing, a non-profit organisation that has been operating in Victoria since the 1930s.
Some 30 years ago, Eileen Kane OAM, then Organising Secretary for the National body, appointed Don Mc Robert JP the organiser for Victoria and the Society’s activities in Asia. Lorraine Perkins took up the position of co-organiser. Karen Latham, Sheryl Norden, Noel Perkins, Sheree Coulthard, Joyce Vohs and Kerry Bradley all became involved and comprise our Organising Committee of today.
Since that time, we have conducted numerous events each year, giving experience to competitors in a wide variety of dance styles, conducting selection events for Interstate and International events; providing financial support for those travelling, workshops, holiday programs and examination services to dance schools.
At a time when International Champions rarely visited our country, Don Mc Robert, in association with Cedric Meers, Frank South & Robert Wrightson, brought to Victoria some of the world’s greatest dancers to demonstrate & teach, providing inspiration to all they met.
Dancers such as:
•Richard & Janet Gleave (many times World Ballroom Champions)
•Donnie Burns & Gaynor Fairweather (many times World Latin Champions)
•Pierre Dulaine & Yvonne Marceau (World Exhibition Champions)
•David & Sharon Savoy (World Exhibition Champions)
•Robert & Vicki Wilke (Exhibition Dancers)
•Kenny & Marion Welsh (10 Dance Champions)
•Stephen Hillier & Lindsey Tait (Ballroom)
•Michael & Vicki Barr (Ballroom)
•Andrew Sinkinson & Lorraine Barry (Ballroom)

•Sammy Stopford & Barbara McColl (Latin)
•Espen & Kristen Salberg (Latin)
•Alan & Hazel Fletcher (Latin)
•John & Betty Wesley (Latin)
•Ron Montez & Elizabeth Curtis (Latin)
•David Sycamore & Denise Weavers (Latin)
•Barry & Cheryl Wrightson (Latin)
•Peter & Inge Fischer (Latin)
Now, we are currently organising one regional event in Albury/Wodonga and four events in Melbourne, including the magnificent Crown event at Crown Entertainment Complex, which is the most glamorous dance event in Australia where we bring a number of overseas judges and competitors.
We are still continuing to sponsor couples and individuals travelling overseas to compete-most recently Tommy Rollinson, our representative to the World Hip Hop Championship in Germany and Julie Jones & Andrey Gorbunov, our Professional Latin representatives, to compete in Thailand. We also support applications for those wanting to come to Australia to train.
And of course, we provide assessment programs for amateurs and professionals. We are also in the process of developing our assessment programs in various Asian Countries.
An overseas full-time course is currently being developed to cater mostly to overseas students from Asia, who are coming to study practical and theoretical dancing in Australia.
